Biographical / Historical
The earliest applicants to Swarthmore College applied directly to the College President. Later, admissions duties shifted to the Dean of Students, until an Admissions Office was established.
When Swarthmore opened in 1869, the cost of attending was $350 per year. 150 years later, for the 2014-2015 school year, $59,610 was the annual cost. The Office of Financial Aid exists to help prospective and current students pay for a Swarthmore education, navigating federal, private, and Swarthmore College aid opportunities. As of 2015, approximately 52 percent of Swarthmore students received Swarthmore Scholarship assistance. During the 2014–15 academic year, the average aid award was $43,250.

Abstract

In the 21st century, a separately staffed Admissions Office and an Office of Financial Aid exist to support these functions. This small collection, dating from 1869 to 2003, includes admissions blanks, lists of applicants, reports, and other materials that document Swarthmore's admissions and financial aid policies and procedures.
