Abstract

This collection includes correspondence from Benjamin Hallowell to his brother-in-law, Charles Farquar. The letters relate primarily to family news, and occasionally address issues related to the Alexandria Boarding School and methods of teaching scientific and mathematical information.

Biographical / Historical

Charles Farquar was a birthright Quaker, the son of Amos and Mary Farquar of Pipe Creek Monthly Meeting in Maryland. He died in 1844. His older sister, Margaret Farquar, married Benjamin Hallowell, and together they opened the Alexandria Boarding School in 1824.
