Abstract

The collection contains correspondence received by Philadelphia Quaker merchant John Ladd Howell and his family. The majority of the letters were sent by his father, John Howell, addresseed to him and to his mother during extended absences in North and South Carolina and Georgia. The letters concern family business with fatherly advice to his son, some local commentary, and mention of mistreatment of the Indians. Of interest is a letter from Richard Waln from the Barbadoes. Also included is the will of his maternal grandfather, John Ladd of New Jersey,

Biographical / Historical

John Ladd Howell was born in 1738, a birthright member of the Society of Friends. His maternal grandfather was John Ladd of Gloucester County, New Jersey. His parents were John and Katherine Ladd Howell who married under the care of Haddonfield Monthly Meeting in 1734. In 1739 the family transferred to Philadelphia Monthly Meeting. John Howell worked as a tanner. He was disowned in 1747 and was conducting business in the South by 1753. In 1761 his son John Ladd Howell married Frances Paschall at Darby Monthly Meeting. He was disowned from Philadelphia Monthly Meeting in 1768 for leaving Philadelphia and his family. He served in the military during the Revolution and died in 1785.
