Edwards Clock scrapbook

Francis C. Pyle (1864-1947), long-time superintendent and treasurer of the George School, was the executor of the estate of Mary Ann (Horne) Leonard in 1911. An early nineteenth century clock was given to Friends Boarding Home as part of the settlement. Pyle compiled the scrapbook for Friends Boarding Home to preserve the history of the clock and the families that were associated with it, all prominent Quaker families of Chester County. Mary Ann's husband, Pennock S. Leonard, had inherited the clock in 1868 from his grandmother, Hannah B. Edwards. Hannah B. Edwards was the daughter of James and Sarah (Pierce) Gibbons. In 1825 she married John Edwards, son of John and Hannah (Pennock) Edwards under the care of Bradford Monthly Meeting. His sister Sarah Edwards (1788-1876) married Joseph Leonard in 1816. Joseph died in 1822, and their son Pennock S. Leonard married Mary Ann Horne, daughter of Davis and Hannah Horne, in 1850. They resided at the consolidated family farms in West Marlborough, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Pennock and Mary Ann Leonard had no children of their own but were devoted to their nephew, John Edwards Leonard, who died in 1878. Pennock S. Leonard died in 1889, and his widow generously supported Friends Home in Kennett as well as other Quaker concerns.
