Biographical / Historical

Swarthmore is a borough located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. After the founding of Swarthmore College in 1864, a residential community and small business hub developed, centered on the College and the train station which was named Westdale until 1872. The Borough of Swarthmore was incorporated in 1893, and its history has since been intertwined with that of the College. Many of its citizens had close associations -- as graduates, employees, or members of the Quaker meeting -- on campus.

The Swarthmore Historical Society was founded in 1988, and its collections were deposited in Friends Historical Library in 1996.

The nucleus of this collection is images used in the book Swarthmore Illustrated: A Centennial History by Susanna K. Morikawa and Patricia C. O'Donnell (1993). Subsequently, other photographs from the Swarthmore Historical Society were added to the collection for ease of access.

Abstract

This collection consists of 4 binders of original and copy photographs and negatives, dating from approximately 1880 to 2005, of the Swarthmore Borough, located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Many of the images were used in the book Swarthmore Illustrated: A Centennial History by Susanna K. Morikawa and Patricia C. O'Donnell (1993).

Arrangement

The photographs are arranged by volume. Within each volume, pictures are filed in the order in which they appear in Swarthmore Illustrated by item number. Negatives are filed with the photograph when there is a full sized, individual negative. 33mm negatives are filed at the back.

Processing Information

Many of the older pictures used in the Centennial Exhibition, with copy photos and negatives originally were catalogued as PA 89, Swarthmore College Lantern Slide Copy Print Collection. For ease of access, the pictures used in Swarthmore Illustrated have been removed from PA 89 and instead stored with PA 64 since more requests for duplication come through that publication. What remains in PA 89 (stored in box with PA 90) are Swarthmore College Pictures not used in Swarthmore Illustrated and not pertaining to the Borough of Swarthmore.
