Biographical / Historical

Sigma Xi is a scientific society for scientists and engineers, established at Cornell University in 1886. The name Sigma Xi (the Greek letters Σ and Ξ) stands for the Greek motto "Spoudon Xynones," or "Companions in Zealous Research."

Swarthmore's petition for chapter establishment was granted in 1923. Since then, the organization has provided funding for research projects, as well as countless lectures featuring prominent scientists. Any student who has produced a written document from a research project is eligible to join. According to the Swarthmore Sigma Xi website, "Disciplines that are covered by Sigma Xi society are: mathematics, statistics, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, and certain subfields of psychology and linguistics."
