Thomas Smedley married Philena Yarnall in 1855 at Middletown Meeting under the care of Chester Monthly Meeting. Philena was the twin sister of Lydia Yarnall. After Thomas's early death in 1875, Lydia helped with the children: Lydia, Harriett, Walter, Horace, Rebecca, Emma.

Emma Smedley (1858-1950) worked as a teacher. She and her sister Rebecca lived in Media, Pennsylvania.
Edward G. Smedley and family, ca. 1905-1924
Edward was the son of William Smedley and Rebecca Webster and the brother of Thomas Smedley (1833-1875) who married Philena Yarnall. Edward G. Smedley (1835-1908) married Elizabeth Sharples (1842-1924) in 1865. He served as superintendent at Westtown. Their daughter Susanna (1875-1970) worked as the bookkeeper at Westtown.
