Biographical / Historical
India League of America; ILA; formed in 1938; a prominent and active member was Jagjit (J.J.) Singh; Pearl S. Buck was the honorary chairperson from the mid-1940s; membership consisted of Americans and citizens of India living in the U.S.; the ILA was devoted to the cause of Indian independence; sought to influence American policies toward India; worked for pan-Asian solidarity; attempted a nuanced anti-Communist policy, independent of American influence; Indian leaders were at times concerned about the ILA's extra-governmental activities; the ILA ceased to exist in 1959.
