Overview

The Pledge of Resistance group in Albany, New York was part of an active nationwide network of grassroots organizations opposed to U.S. intervention in Central America. The Albany group was active between 1984 and 1993. Its members engaged in marches, protest demonstrations, extensive correspondence and meetings with legislators, fundraising activities, boycotts, and networking with like-minded organizations. The Albany POR produced newsletters, press releases, and leaflets. The Pledge of Resistance in Albany and the national Pledge of Resistance were dissolved in 1989.

The Pledge of Resistance group in Albany, New York was part of an active nationwide network of grassroots organizations opposed to U.S. intervention in Central America. The Albany group was active between 1984 and 1993. Its members engaged in marches, protest demonstrations, extensive correspondence and meetings with legislators, fundraising activities, boycotts, and networking with like-minded organizations. The Albany POR produced newsletters, press releases, and leaflets. Pledge of Resistance was a nationwide network of individuals and organizations. As of 1988, over 80,000 people nationwide had taken the Pledge -- a commitment to oppose bloodshed by participating in organized, nonviolent direct action. Organizers believed that the Pledge helped prevent a full-scale US invasion in Central America, and laid the groundwork for ending the ongoing "wars of attrition" being waged against the people of Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. These records are from the Pledge of Resistance group in Albany, New York, which was active between its organization in late 1984 and its cessation in 1993. The Albany group produced newsletters, press releases, and leaflets. The Pledge of Resistance in Albany and the national Pledge of Resistance were dissolved in 1993.
