Biographical / Historical
MADRE; headquartered in New York, New York; an international women's human rights organization, partnering with community-based women's groups worldwide; began in 1983 by a group of women activists, poets, teachers, artists and health professionals as a response to the U.S. war against Nicaragua; founding director was Kathy Engel; programs address issues of sustainable development, women's health, violence and war, discrimination and racism, women's leadership development, and human rights education.
