Biographical Note
Victor L. Berger (1860-1929) of Wisconsin was a member of the House of Representatives. In 1919, Victor Berger and four Socialist co-defendents were convicted of conspiracy in violation of the Espionage Act and were sentence to twenty years at Leavenworth Prison. The verdict was unsuccessfully appealed. Berger's co-defendents were Adolph Germer, J. Louis Engdahl, Irwin St. John Tucker, and William F. Kruse, all of whom were activists in the Socialist Party.
