Biographical / Historical
A Conference was held in Baltimore in 1867 "to consider of the tried and suffering condition of the Native American tribes in the Western States and territories of this country" with participation by Baltimore, Philadelphia, Genesee. Ohio, Indiana, and New York. These discussions prompted New York Hicksites to consider the appointment of a committee "to act in conjunction with Committees from other Yearly Meetings" on the subject at their Yearly Meeting... in 1868. The Convention of Delegates was assigned the supervision of the Northern Superintendency the following year. In 1893, responsibility for concerns of Native Americans was passed from the Representative Committee to that of Philanthropic Labor, and the Indian Committee was incorporated into the latter. The Committee on Philanthropic Labor also had oversight of Friends' work in Temperance, Tobacco, Education of Colored People in the South, Prison Reform, and Arbitration.
