Biographical / Historical

The Orthodox Temperance Committee was formed in 1873 to create awareness and to control substance abuse. It changed its name in 1938 to Committee on Public Morals and was laid down in 1946; at that time, its duties were assumed by the Board of Religious Education. In 1878, a joint Committee on the subject of intemperance was named by the Hicksite Yearly Meeting; the following year a standing committee was named. Temperance work was placed under the... supervision of the committee on Philanthropic Labor when it was established in 1885, and it was included as a section of the Peace and Service Committee in1942. The 15th Street Temperance Committee continued as a committee of the united Yearly Meeting after 1955. In 1964 it became the Committee of Health Education. In 1981 it was laid down, though the Substance Addiction Task Group was formed from 1981 - 1988, when that group was laid down.
