Biographical / Historical

Akwesasne Freedom School, founded in 1979, is a Mohawk school in Akwesasne, a reservation located along the St-Lawrence River which straddles Ontario and Quebec in Canada, and New York in the United States. Mohawk is the language of instruction, and the school's purpose is to reclaim Mohawk values and traditions, to prevent their destruction in white, western school systems, and to instill a sense of pride in being Mohawk and in being part of the Mohawk Nation.
