Manumissions displayed by Chesterfield Meeting, undated ca. 1880-1930? (manumissions dated 1777-1781)

 File — Folder: RG2 OVERSIZE
Identifier: RG2/Ph/C47 8.14 ++

Scope and Contents

Three manumission certificates (William Wood manumitting Catharine, Israel Wright saying he will manumit Samuel 12 years after the date of the manumission, Mary Newbold saying she will manumit Thomas 3 years after the date of the manumission).

Of special note, these three manumission certificates were pasted on a large sheet of paper much later (undated but later, circa 1880-1930) to demonstrate "Friends as the friend of the Negro," which the creator believed was demonstrated by showing Quaker enslavers as examples of "Friends active work for "freedom of the colored man" is shown by Friends' record, two (of the many) are here shown."
