Biographical / Historical

New York Yearly Meeting of Friends at Poplar Ridge was founded in 1853 by the Wilburite separation in New York Yearly Meeting. It is sometimes referred to as Wilburite and sometimes Conservative in addition to being called New York Yearly Meeting (Primitive).

Poplar Ridge Yearly Meeting's origins trace back to Scipio Monthly Meeting, which was established in 1808 under New York Yearly Meeting's Easton Quarterly Meeting, and put under Scipio Quarterly Meeting at its establishment in 1825. In 1828 the Separation divided Scipio Quarterly into Orthodox and Hicksite branches, and in 1847 the Orthodox branch separated into Gurneyite and Wilburite branches. The much smaller Wilburite branch divided yet again in 1859 in Otisite and Kingite factions.

The Kingite branch stopped meeting around 1880. The Otisite branch, which remained in sympathy with other Primitive Quaker meetings, laid down its yearly meeting in 1896, but its remaining meeting, the reunited Wilburite Scipio Quarterly Meeting, continued meeting in summer until its union with Canada Yearly Meeting (Conservative) in 1916.
