Biographical / Historical

A seasonal meeting for worship at Centre was established in 1687 by Newark [Kennett] Monthly Meeting. In 1690, the meeting was established on a year-round basis; until 1720, this meeting circulated between Centre and Newark. A preparative meeting at Centre was established in 1707. In 1808, the meeting for worship and preparative meeting became part of Centre [Hockessin] Monthly Meeting. Centre Preparative Meeting (Orthodox) was absorbed by Hockessin Preparative Meeting in 1827. The meeting for worship was discontinued in 1830. The Hicksite preparative meeting was discontinued in 1876. The name of this meeting is often spelled "Center."
