Biographical / Historical

The Ohio Yearly Meeting was set off from Baltimore Yearly Meeting in 1812 for Friends west of the Allegheny Mountains (including Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana). It opened in 1813 at Short Creek in Mount Pleasant, Ohio. Indiana Yearly Meeting was set off in 1821, composed of Friends in the states of Indiana, Illinois, and the western part of Ohio.

Ohio Yearly Meeting separated into Hicksite and Orthodox branches in 1828, and Congregational/Progressive meetings split off in 1850-1852. In 1854, the Orthodox branch further divided into Wilburite and Gurneyite sections. Members of nine particular Wilburite meetings split off in 1862-63 and formed the Ohio General Meeting of Men and Women Friends. The Hicksite branch of Ohio Yearly Meeting stopped holding business sections in 1919, and by the 1940s, it had laid down all of its constituent meetings.
