Collection includes two diaries (1917-1919) kept by James Babbitt. The first dairy, entitled "Haverford Reconstruction Unit No. 1," describes the work of emergency relief in France beginning with the departure of Dr. Babbitt and 54 men from Haverford College in August, 1917, and through the establishment and operation of Hôpital du Chateau (Chateau Hospital) in Sermaize-les-Bains, Marne, France. Margot and Jim Backas were strong supporters of the arts in the Washington, D.C./Baltimore area. They held numerous leadership and administrative positions in various arts organizations. Margot was artist Anne Truitt’s literary executor and good friend. Included in this collection are letters from Truitt, newspaper clippings and advertisements for art exhibits.

Abstract
Correspondence includes letters written by Amos W. Bacon of Philadelphia to his children, to Samuel W. Bacon from his father and brother while he was at Westtown School, and a love letter from Thomas Bacon to his future wife, Elizabeth Hall. Also contains the probate copy of the will of Charles West, Elizabeth Hall's copy book, the journal of Jane Wilson Bacon, and genealogical material on the entire family.

David Backon kept a journal during his time with the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confderacy) in 1974. Entries describe Bacon’s journey to the Haudenosaunee territory, and interactions between himself and the members of the Haudenosaunee, as well as discussions between representatives from the United States and Six Nations governments concerning the treaty that was to determine the land rights of the Haudenosaunee after the end of the Revolutionary War.
