Abstract Rufus Matthew Jones was born on January 25, 1863 in South China, Maine. His parents were Edwin and Mary Gifford Hoxie Jones. The Peace Association of Friends in America was organized in 1867 by Orthodox Friends in the New York, Baltimore, North Carolina, Ohio, Indiana, Western and Iowa Yearly Meetings in reaction to the Civil War, with its mission being to convince Friends and others that war was unchristian, inhumane and unnecessary.

Overview

In 3mo 1944, Rufus Jones published an article, "Are We Ready," in Friends Intelligencer. In response to his concern for deepening the spiritual life of the Religious Society of Friends, members of both the Race Street and Arch Street Philadelphia Yearly Meetings gathered six months later in the meeting house at 15th and Race Streets. Records include minutes, correspondence, and publications.
