Swarthmore College Student Council records

Abstract

Contains the records of the Swarthmore College Student Council from 1943-2012, with gaps in some series. Student Council was created in 1937 as a companion organization to the Women’s Student Government Association (WSGA) and the Men’s Student Government Association (MSGA), charged with governing situations and activities involving both men and women. After 1970, Student Council has been the sole non-judicial student governing body on campus.

Star, Vol. 1#4, is dated 1874 and apparently compiled by several authors, with notes on campus life and comments. Tau Alpha Omicron Records

Abstract Tau Alpha Omicron, a men's Greek fraternity, was founded at Swarthmore College in 1907. It became part of the national fraternity Phi Delta Theta before 1923, designated Pennsylvania Kappa Chapter. Its charter was revoked in 1958 when its members protested the national organization's racial, ethnic, and religious restrictions on membership. Norman Walton Swayne Family Papers

Abstract The Swayne family were Quakers of southern Chester County, Pennsylvania. Caleb Swayne was a farmer and tanner, and his son, Benjamin, also operated a tan yard and conducted a school for boys, the London Grove Boarding School. Evan Thomas Swayne also taught at London Grove, but moved to the Eaton Institute, a boarding school for girls in Kennett, after 1865. Frederick Barnes Tolles (1915-1975), Quaker librarian, teacher, and historian, was Director of Friends Historical Library from 1951-1970, and a member of the Department of History at Swarthmore College. This collection contains the papers of primarily relating to his books and articles on Quaker history and biography, along with other writings, including research notes on a proposed history of Swarthmore College.
