Hettie G. Fenimore family correspondence

Abstract
This collection consists primarily of letters written to Hettie Fenimore by her family, including her brother Jason, his wife Mary, their children, and Eliza Fell. The correspondence relates personal and local news. Also included are letters written by Hettie's mother, Amy, and a copy of a commencement speech given at Central High School, Philadelphia, in 1858 by her nephew, Frank. Frank's letters contain several of his poems and amusing anecdotes about Philadelphia in the 1850's.

Miers Fisher (1748-1819), a birthright Quaker, was a prominent lawyer, legislator, philanthropist, merchant, and scientist in early Federal Philadelphia. Benjamin Warner, publisher and bookseller, married Fisher's daughter, Lydia, in 1814. Born in 1748 in Philadelphia, the son of Joshua and Sarah Rowland Fisher, Miers Fisher married Sarah Redwood in 1774. Friends' Home for Children

Friends' Home for Children (“Friendly Acres”) was established in 1881 in Philadelphia by Hicksite Quakers. The Home was a residential facility for orphans and other children in need, modeled on a homelike environment rather than the large institutional more typical of the era. The Home was administered by a Board of Managers which originally was composed entirely of members of the Society of Friends.
