The commonplace books of the Shoemaker family include advice, reflections, excerpts of letters, prose, poetry, and excerpts organized by topic, including matrimony, happiness, pleasure, and character.
John Shoemaker journals
John Shoemaker was a Quaker minister. Shoemaker's journals detail his religious visits throughout North America. Entries generally describe travel between destinations, families that host Shoemaker and his companions throughout their travels, and descriptions of Quaker meetings attended and Quaker families visited.
Henry Simmons journals
Henry Simmons was a Quaker missionary to the Seneca Nation and a member Middletown Monthly Meeting. Henry Simmons's journals are related to time Simmons spent with the Oneida and Seneca nations.
"On Reading Shakespeare"
Logan Pearsall Smith's "On Reading Shakespeare,' originally published in 1933, explores Shakespeare's writing, particularly his characterization and command of language. The manuscript is handwritten and includes various edits and annotations made by Smith.
Also included are the notes on the manuscript from Scribners (where the manuscript was purchased by Christopher Morley), and a letter by Morley written at the time of his donation of the manuscript in 1952.
Isaac Stephenson diary
Isaac Stephenson was a British Quaker minister who went on religious visits throughout Great Britain and the United States. His diary entries describe Stephenson's travels in the Quaker ministry in New England, including descriptions of towns he visited, Friends who hosted him or with whom he visited, and Meetings attended.
Stokes-Woodruff Family papers
This collection contains a wide variety of documents pertaining to both the Stokes and Woodruff families. In addition to family history materials, it also includes materials from F.J. Stokes Company.
Delphic Literary Society Records
The Delphic Literary Society was a Swarthmore College men's literary society established in 1874. In 1913, the group merged with the Eunomian Society to became the Athenaeum. Records include the Delphic Literary Society's constitution, histories of the group, minutes, library and financial records, censor's accounts, miscellaneous papers and scattered issues from 1890 to 1902 of the Delphic Chronicle and Delphic Oracle.
Eunomian Literary Society Records
The Eunomian Literary Society was a men's debating and speaking club founded at Swarthmore College, Pa., in 1871. In 1913, the group merged with the Delphic Literary Society, forming the Athenaeum. Records include minutes from 1871 to May 1913. Also includes printed copies of the constitution and by-laws and correspondence from 1872 to 1900.
