William Wistar Comfort papers

Abstract

Papers of William Wistar Comfort (1876-1955), president of Haverford College in a particularly sensitive time between two world wars and scholar of French literature. Comfort was a prolific writer and speaker on Quaker topics, but also on such diverse subjects as William Cowper, children's stories, education and music.

Joseph Conrad collection

Abstract

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924), a novelist and short story writer, was born Jozef Konrad Teodor Korzeniowski in Berdichev, Ukraine, and became a British citizen in 1886. Best known for his short story "Heart of Darkness" (1902), Conrad also wrote a number of novels on his travels. The collection includes letters from Conrad and third party letters, as well as three corrected typescript drafts.

Sarah Wistar Cope commonplace books

Abstract

This collection is comprised of two volumes of the commonplace books of Sarah Wistar Cope. The first volume includes extracts on moral and religious topics, poetry, and pressed leaves. The second volume includes a memorandum of a religious visit to New York, extracts, and an "account of Joseph Hoag's family."

William Dillwyn diary

Abstract

William Dillwyn was a Philadelphia Quaker abolitionist who was tutored under Anthony Benezet. Entries describe Dillwyn's travels from his home in Burlington, New Jersey, to Charleston, South Carolina, including lists of things to pack, the voyage, and the weather. Later entries describe Dillwyn's time in South Carolina, visits with Friends, business, and Quaker meetings.

This collection includes Theodore Dreiser's letters to Mabel Cheyney, printed documents concerning the suppression of Dreiser's The Genius, and several printed pamphlets and previews regarding Dreiser's work. Mabel Cheney was probably the daughter of George S. and Mary Wilson Price Cheyney, Quakers from Thornbury Township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania.
