George M. Justice Memorandums, 1825-1861

Abstract

George M. Justice was a successful Philadelphia merchant and important Hicksite Quaker. Beginning in 1825 until shortly before his death, he kept volumes of memorandum reflecting his thoughts on religion, the Hicksite Separation and its aftermath in Philadelphia, family information, astronomy, slavery, and other topics.

Kaltenbach Family Correspondence

Abstract

The collection consists primarily of letters written by John E. Kaltenbach to his parents, Edward C. and Ethel Kaltenbach, from Wesleyan University, Yale Divinity School, and while working as the acting director for the Scattergood Hostel for European Refugees in Iowa. Also a small number of letters from his sister, Linda Kaltenbach, while a student at Swarthmore College.

Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of the single volume of Tetsuko Kawahara's master's thesis, entitled "The Friends Mission in Japan: 1885-1947." The thesis was for the Graduate School of International Affairs at the University of Tsukuba. The manuscript features chapters on: Quakerism and Foreign Mission, the Friends Mission in Japan: the beginning 1885-1900, Social Orientation of Quakerism in a Changing World, and the Friends Mission in Japan: the Transformation 1900-1947.

Kirk family correspondence

Abstract

This collection includes letters written by Thomas Kirk and his son Israel to their family in Pennsylvania as they moved first to Center Monthly Meeting in Ohio, and later to Duck Creek Monthly Meeting, Ind. The letters relate to family and local news and business. Two letters refer to the growing division in the Society, as the Hicksite controversy reaches Ohio Yearly Meeting.

Abstract The Kite and Bassett families were Orthodox Quakers from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Lynn, Massachusetts, respectively. James Kite was born in 1808, the son of Benjamin and Rebecca Kite of Philadelphia. In 1837 he was granted a certificate to Salem Monthly Meeting in Massachusetts to marry Lydia B.
