Overview

Papers of the Philadelphia families Bloomfield, Coates, Cresson, Emlen, Gumbes, Horner, Howel, Lloyd, Macomb, Moore, Vaux and Wetherill families from the 19th and 20th centuries. Some of these families were Quaker, including Coates, Emlen and Vaux; others had some Quaker family members, including Cresson, other families, including Gumbes and Wetherill, did not remain Quaker.

Fritz and Karoline Solmitz papers

Overview Fritz Solmitz (1893-1933) was an early and outspoken leader in the opposition to Nazism, an editor of a Social Democratic newspaper in Lübeck and a member of the City council. Because of his active opposition to the Nazis, and probably because he was a Jew, he died of mistreatment in a German prison shortly after Hitler came to power. Walter Hinchman portfolio

Overview

Walter Hinchman's portfolio of sketches and photographs includes the many of the plates used in his book, “Sketches & Poems.” The sketches were done during Hinchman’s time at a machine shop in Ohio at the end of the Civil War and on a survey trip (1867-1868) for a transcontinental railway from Kansas to California. There are sketches of the Pennsylvania Steel Company (1869), animals, flowers, trees, people, and landscapes.
