Abstract A.J. Muste (1885-1967), was ordained a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church, but later (1917), he became a member of the Society of Friends. During World War I, Muste's refusal to abandon his pacifist position led to his forced resignation from the Central Congregational Church in Newtonville, Massachusetts. The New Swarthmoor Community was founded in 1969 and located in Clinton, New York. The New Swarthmoor Community was a communal household which worship, simplicity, strong nonviolent opposition to war, and a radical return to early Friends' (Quakers), principles and practices. Additional households were established in Philadelphia, Chicago, Baltimore, Ohio, Michigan and Sumneytown, Pennsylvania. The community was formally laid down in 1974.

Abstract

Victor Paschkis (1898-1991), born in Vienna, was a Quaker, a mechanical engineer, and a professor. He was the founder, and first president, of the Society for Social Responsibility in Science. He also served as the chairman of the National Friends Conference on Race Relations, the American Friends Service Committee's Race Relations Committee, and the Committee on Fair Employment. Paschkis taught at Columbia University.

Abstract The Peace Action Center began in 1961 as a continuation of the vigil at Fort Detrick, Md. Peace activists had sponsored a continuous vigil as early as 1959 seeking the abandonment of biological weapons and appealed for the conversion of the fort into a world health center.
