Abstract
The Richard Humphreys Foundation was created as the result of a bequest of Richard Humphreys (1750-1832), a Philadelphia Quaker who left funds for the establishment of a school for African Americans in Philadelphia. The school was founded as the Institute for Colored Youth. A group of Quakers, known first as the Association and after 1842 as the Corporation, oversaw the Institute. The collection contains personal papers, primarily correspondence, of members of the Richardson and Yarnall families, Pennsylvania Quakers who emigrated to America in the 1680s. The families were united by the marriage in 1816 of Nathaniel Richardson and Hannah Yarnall of Byberry. Of special significance are the diaries of Quaker ministers Peter Yarnall (1754-1798) and his second wife, Hannah Haines Thornton Yarnall (1765-1822) and their correspondence with family and fellow ministers. ...

Alice Hall Paxson (1868-1955) was a Quaker author and editor, of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Thomas Heston and Lydia H. (Cox) Hall of Chester County. The family moved to Swarthmore, Pa., about 1889, and Alice graduated from Swarthmore College in 1888. In 1897, she married Charles Paxson. Joseph Scattergood, an Elder of Green St. Monthly Meeting, was a signer of the first letter of concern by the Elders of Philadelphia to Elias Hicks regarding the doctrine he was preaching (1822). Diary entries describe Quaker meetings, social calls and family news, visits to family and friends in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, births, deaths, and marriages within the Quaker community, and Scattergood's work as a school teacher.

This collection consists of documents relating to the withdrawal of Elizabeth Sellers from the Society of Friends and her subsequent disownment. Included is a letter from to Darby Monthly Meeting explaining her reasons for leaving the Society of Friends. In the letter she accuses Quakers of failing to take action on issues of temperance, pacifism, and abolition. Also included are genealogical notes on the Sellers family.
