Abstract
The AIDS Working Group of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting began in 1992 as a response to the growing severity of the AIDS epidemic. The main focus of the group, organized under the title of "A Quaker Ministry to Persons With AIDS," was to visit those terminally ill with AIDS to provide solace, friendship, and spiritual counseling. The Central America Working Group of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting began in 1985 under the name "Sanctuary Working Group." In 1986, the group was given over twenty one thousand dollars with which to send volunteers to the American southwestern border to aid refugees. Abstract
The Church Unity Committee was composed of a small group of members-at-large appointed by the Yearly Meeting and those Friends who served "in any official capacity as representatives of this Yearly Meeting on State, National, or World Councils of Churches." It had originally been appointed by the Orthodox branch to coordinate ecumenical contacts. The Committee was laid down by Representative Meeting in 1973.
