Charles Evans diary

Charles Evans was a Quaker physician and was active in the Quaker community. His "Diary of a European Trip, 1861" details Evans's voyage from Philadelphia to England, including descriptions of the captain and other cabin passengers, illness on board, and the weather during the voyage. Upon arrival in England, diary entries relate visits to Friends, Quaker meetings, and Evans's tour of England.

Fowler Orphanage Association Records

Overview

Fowler Orphanage (later Fowler Home for Girls) in Cairo, Egypt was founded in 1906 with money collected by John and Esther Fowler, both members of the Society of Friends. The Fowler Orphanage Association, afiliated with Ohio Yearly Meeting (Conservative), was formed in 1927 to provide support and met yearly until it was laid down in 1987. Collection includes minutes of the Association as well as related correspondence, financial records, and photographs.

Friends' Opportunity in the Orient

Friends Opportunity in the Orient was an unofficial Hicksite organization which sponsored a Quaker teacher in Canton, China, in the 1920s. The collection contains primarily correspondence with Margaret Hallowell Riggs, who was sponsored to teach at Canton Christian College and Canton Hospital.

Topics include his spiritual life, meeting leaders of religious denominations in Europe, with Friends and other religious sects (Saints), visits to schools, prisons, poorhouses and hospitals during travels, visits with members of European aristocracy, Russian nobility and Pope Pius VII (1819), social and religious situation in Haiti (1816).
