This collection also contains an excerpt from a 1940 publication titled "With Clean Hands and a Neutral Heart, America!" by Brent Dow Allinson, an individual Edward would connect with via letters due to their shared surname.

Abstract
Edward Ash was a British Quaker and doctor. His letterbook includes personal correspondence related to religious convictions and family news. Letter writers include Barclay, Anna Maria C. of Horne, Robert Barron, Gulielma Penn, and William Pim. A number of letters are addressed to George Fox. A copy of a letter from Ellis Hooke to Margaret Fell is also included.

Abstract
The Association for the Care of Colored Orphans, also known as “The Shelter,” was founded in Philadelphia by Quaker women in 1822 to care for black orphans, both boys and girls, within a nurturing, home-like environment. In 1915, it relocated to Cheyney, Pa, and became a home for girls. In 1965, its name was changed to “Friends Shelter for Girls,” and its mission evolved to serve as a home for teenaged girls. The Association of Friends for the Free Instruction of Adult Colored Persons was a Quaker organization organized in 1789 in Philadelphia to operate a charity school for black adults. The Association provided free adult education to African-Americans until 1904 when it was dissolved and its assets were transferred to the Institute for Colored Youth. Richard Mead Atwater (1844-1922) was the son of Stephen Atwater and Mary Weaver, both of whom were Quaker. This collection is comprised of Atwater's diary, 1862; letters concerning Brown University; club memberships and letters concerning the memberships and autobiographical remarks written in 1917 as well as an earlier biographical sketch.
