Martha Schofield Papers

Overview Martha Schofield (1839-1916) was a Hicksite Quaker teacher from Pennsylvania who founded the Schofield Normal and Industrial School in Aiken, S. C., in 1868 to provide education for formerly enslaved people. The School gradually evolved into a boarding school for training young blacks in industrial trades or to become teachers. Andrew H. Woods papers

Overview Andrew H. Woods (1872 – 1956) became vice president of Canton College in Canton, China in 1899. He maintained his association with Canton College throughout the Boxer Rebellion and the dethronement of the Manchu Dynasty. Woods moved back and forth between China and the United States with his wife, Fanny Sinclair, who graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1901. In 1929, the couple and their children settled in Iowa.
