Overview
The Bettle family were prominent 19th century Quaker merchants in Philadelphia. Samuel Bettle, Sr., was Clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting at the time of the Separation in 1827. His son, Samuel Bettle, Jr., was also a Quaker minister. They had at least five children, among whom was Samuel, Jr.; the latter married Mary Ann Jones in 1831. Scope and Contents
Papers include such biographical information as provided in William Wistar Comfort’s autobiography, a small amount of correspondence, as with his father, Howard Comfort, Comfort’s writings on French topics, Friends’ stories for children, on William Cowper and primarily on Quaker topics, including on William Penn, Anthony Benezet and Stephen Grellet. Comfort spoke publicly on many occasions, specifically at schools and colleges as well as in France during his stay there in 1937.

The collection contains travel minutes for Stephen Grellet's ministry in 1800-1805 in the northeastern U.S., a copy of Stephen Grellet's account of the religious conversion of a Swede who was called upon to preach to pirates, and the original and a manuscript copy of Grellet's religious epistle dated 24, 6mo, 1813, to New York Monthly Meeting, sent from Morlaix, France.
