William Woodman correspondence

Abstract

This collection includes letters received by William Woodman, primarily from his cousins Mary Anna Stradling and Annie Michener. Mary Anna Stradling's letters recount the rise of spiritualism in her community, her views on and interests in literature, and her conception of God. In one letter she muses on the changes among Orthodox Friends, and that they are now little different from Hicksite. Her writings reflect the daily life of women in the 19th Century.

Overview Andrew H. Woods (1872 – 1956) became vice president of Canton College in Guangzhou, China in 1899. He maintained his association with Canton Christian College throughout the Boxer Rebellion, or Yihetuan Movement, and the end of the Qing dynasty. Woods moved back and forth between China and the United States with his wife, Fanny Sinclair, who graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1901. In 1929, the couple and their children settled in Iowa. Overview Mary Katharine Woodworth (1900 – 1988) graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1924 with a Greek and English major and a minor in archaeology. She received her Ph. D in English from Bryn Mawr in 1933. After her book on British poet and genealogist Samuel Egerton Brydges was published in 1935, she began teaching in the English department at Bryn Mawr, and introduced the college’s first course on 20th-century writers.
