James Whitall manuscripts

Abstract

This collection is comprised of two manuscripts collected by James Whitall. The collection includes the manuscript of a memoir or autobiography by Honah Landis, entitled "How Literature Came to Texas," and a French play by Edmond See, translated by Whitall, entitled "A Friend of His Youth."

John S. Whitall diary

Abstract

Whitall kept this diary for his sister, to whom he addresses the majority of his entries. Entries include quotes from scripture, Quaker sermons, and poetry, as well as descriptions of his voyage from New York to France by sea. During his time in France, entries describe Whitall's travels to Nantes and Bordeaux, as well as visits with Friends in France.

Abstract Mary Whitall Worthington was a 1910 graduate of Bryn Mawr College and the president of the Bryn Mawr chapter of the Woman’s Equal Suffrage League. She was the niece of Bryn Mawr president M. Carey Thomas, being the daughter of Thomas’s sister, Grace Thomas Worthington. She grew up with her mother in England, after her parents’ divorce in 1896, and returned to England during the summers while she was in college. Abstract The collection contains the correspondence of Anna M. Simpson White (1866-1965), daughter of David and Tacie Satterthwaite Simpson of Langhorne, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. She was a birthright member of Falls Monthly Meeting. In 1871 the family transferred to Middletown Monthly Meeting where in 1905 Anna married Ashton White, a local farmer. He died in 1911.
