Biographical / Historical
The Friends Literary and Library Association was a Hicksite Quaker organization formed in New York City in 1880 to provide opportunity for mutual improvement in religious and literary subjects. Members gathered weekly to discuss published essays and social issues, give reports or read from their own essays. Debates were organized and held as public events. The organization also maintained a library. Some of the individuals involved included Rachel W. Underhill, Benjamin Smith, J. William Hutchinson, Mary J. McDowell, and John Cox.

The collection was given as part of the transfer of records of New York Yearly Meeting from the Haviland Records Room in 1997.
