Biographical / Historical
Barnes Trustees Inc. was formed in 1949 to hold in trust for Abington Meeting and School the land deeded for its use February of 1697. Also included in their responsibility are investments made with funds received from land sales over time.
John Barnes gave Abington 120 acres on which to build a meetinghouse. Until the beginning of the 20th century the Meeting only used a small portion of the land and leased the rest to tenants. In 1912 a court decision allowed the Meeting to sell the part of the Barnes land not needed for Meeting purposes, and the proceeds were invested and the income applied to the Meeting. In 1949 the duties of managing the bequest devolved upon the corporation called John Barnes Trustees. The trustees administer the assets under the original trust guidelines, with the principal purpose being to provide support for Abington Friends School. There are nine trustees and membership in Abington Meeting is required.
