Biographical / Historical
Elizabeth Shinn Haines was born December 12th, 1823, the first-born of eight children of Earl and Sarah (Comfort) Shinn of Philadelphia. Her younger sister, Lydia Comfort Shinn, married Richard Cadbury, who was active in the anti-slavery movement. Her youngest brother, Earl Shinn, was a prominent art critic and historian. Elizabeth Shinn married Henry Haines (1819-1905), son of Job and Phoebe Haines, on October 1st, 1845, under the care of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting (Orthodox), and they had one surviving child, Henry Haines. Elizabeth Haines died in 1883.
