Scope and Contents

Contains diaries (1881-1908) of Lydia Jones Sharpless Hunn, a Philadelphia Orthodox Quakers. Also includes reminiscences, written 1893, of childhood visits to her grandparents' home in Chester County, Pa., and brief accounts of her study at Westtown School and her parents' activity in various Philadelphia social causes.

The diaries are in bound volumes and arranged chronologically.

Biographical / Historical

Lydia Jones Sharples was born 12/15/1818, the daughter of Townsend Sharpless and Mary Brinton Jones Sharpless. Her family had roots in Chester County, and she briefly attended the Westtown School. Her parents were active in Quaker social causes. Lydia Jones Sharples married Ezekiel Hunn, son of Ezekiel and Tabitha (Newel) Hunn, on 6/30/1836, under the care of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting (Orthodox). Ezekiel Hunn was born in Delaware and had been apprenticed to her father, a successful Quaker merchant. Ezekial Hunn (1810-1902) also was a successful merchant. The couple lived in Philadelphia, Pa., and had three children: Townsend Sharpless, Ezekiel, and Mary Sharpless.

Accession no. 97-006

The donor is the daughter of Lydia Hunn's son, Ezekiel. The diary of a vacation trip to Europe with her husband, 1887, was purchased in 1997 and added to the collection.

Processing Information

Diaries arranged in chronological order and placed in Record Group 5. 1997 purchased added to collection. Plant material pressed in diaries was removed and discarded.
