Scope and Contents

Benjamin H. Branch, Jr. (1919-1993), son of Benjamin Harrison and Rachel Neill Hoge Branch of Loudoun Co., Virginia, was a birthright Quaker and member of Goose Creek United Meeting. He was active in the Friends Meeting of Washington, acting as Historian.

The few letters in the collection are from the Hoge family. Benjamin Branch's mother was born Rachel Neill Hoge (1874-1944); her sister, Elizabeth "Bessie" Hoge (1870-1948) married Franklin P. Wilson. The remainder of this collection relates to the Conference of Friends in the Americas, which Benjamin Branch attended June 1977. It includes workshop materials and notes and subsequent correspondence.

The collection contains personal papers and materials relating to the Conference of Friends in America. Series 1 contains genealogical information and Hoge family letters and copies of letters from Nathan Jarvis. Series 2 includes materials on the Conference of Friends in the Americas, held in Wichita, Kansas, in 1977, with related correspondence, 1977-1992.

Biographical / Historical

Benjamin H. Branch, Jr., (1919-1993) was the son of Benjamin Harrison and Rachel Branch of Loudoun County, VA. He was a birthright member of Lincoln Monthly Meeting, and in 1950, he became a member of Goose Creek United Meeting. In 1947, he married Marjorie Lee Browne. Benjamin Branch was a longtime attender and Historian at the Friends Meeting of Washington.

Original correspondence in the collection is from the Hoge family. Benjamin Branch's mother was born Rachel Neill Hoge (1874-1944); her sister, Elizabeth "Bessie" Hoge (1870-1948) married Franklin P. Wilson. There is also a bound volume of correspondence (photocopies and typescript, 1833-1851) of Nathan Jarvis to relatives in Massachusetts. The father of Branch's grandmother, Mellissa Maurice Jarvis, he was a businessman working in New Orleans.

The remainder of this collection relates to the Conference of Friends in the Americas, which Benjamin Branch, Jr., attended June 1977.

Donor: Friends Meeting of Washington, 1994; Accession number: 1994-039

The collection was bequeathed to Friends Meeting of Washington, with permission to dispose of material as suitable. Friends Meeting of Washington deposited the papers at FHL and transferred that permission.

Processing Information

Material sorted and non-Quaker genealogical items offered to Virginia State Historical Society. The printed materials in this collection relating to Friends Meeting of Washington and Baltimore Yearly Meeting were checked for duplicates, as were the published genealogies. Genealogical books and BYM proceedings were added to duplicates. Manuscript materials divided into two series, described, and arranged chronologically. Stored in one document box and placed in Record Group 5. In 2014, a bound volume of Nathan Jarvis correspondence that had been separated from the manuscript material was added to Series 1.
