Scope and Contents
The collection includes three scrapbooks, some correspondence, and writings The first of the scrapbooks is a "Book of Remembrance" for Elizabeth L. Hazard upon her death in 1971; the book, organized by Painter, is made up of memorials for the deceased. The second volume, gathered by A. Day Bradley, includes letters, newspaper clippings, and biographies of Painter. The third is a collection of photographs and clippings collected by Painter during his life and his travels to four continents. The correspondence is largely with Mary G. Cook, Keeper of Records in the Haviland Records Room in New York.

Biographical / Historical
Levinus King Painter was a Quaker minister, author, and social activist. Born in Spiceland, Indiana, in 1889, he attended Spiceland Academy, Earlham College, and Hartford Theological Seminary. His pastoral service began in Collins, N.Y. in 1914, and he later served at Poplar Ridge (N.Y.), Monkton and South Starksboro (Vt.), Clintondale (N.Y.), Putney (Vt.), and back to Collins from 1942-1956. He also worked as Interim Secretary of Friends Africa Mission from 1956-1957. He died in 1983.
