Biographical / Historical
Elizabeth Newlin Baker, Quaker peace activist from Coatesville, Pa., was born in September 29, 1880, the daughter of H. Preston and Eliza Baker. She graduated from Swarthmore College in 1902.
She supported many peace organizations operating in association with the Society of Friends. Her correspondence reveals her fear of international communist movements and support of temperance. She supported the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Committee on Race Relations as a correspondent, promoting the agenda of the committee. Another letter shows her association with a goodwill project for German children after WWII. Other letters contain several student peace stamps which she helped promote.
She served as a committee member for the Chester County Job Mobilization Committee. The statewide program, envisioned to create jobs in late 1939 and early 1940 for Pennsylvania's one million unemployed citizens, called for a standing committee in each of Pennsylvania's counties to seek out and create job opportunities.
Elizabeth Baker died in June 1972.
