Biographical / Historical
Morgan Bunting (1863-1929) was a member of Darby Monthly Meeting, Darby, Pa., and descendent of Samuel Bunting, Sr. (1692-1759) who emigrated from England in the early eighteenth century. Morgan was the son of Joseph and Emma (Cadwallader) Bunting and received his education at the Friends School in Darby and graduated from Friends Central School in Philadelphia in 1880. His family had deep roots in Darby Monthly Meeting, but he was not a birthright member. In 1889, he became a member of the Society of Friends on his own request and was active in many of the Society's activities, including serving as Clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Hicksite). An architect by occupation, Bunting designed a number of structures for Swarthmore College as well as the design for the Buck Hill Falls Inn in the Poconos. Although he worked a general practice, many of his clients were fellow Quakers and Quaker institutions. In addition, he had a great interest in Darby history and genealogy. In 1891, he became a member of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the Genealogical Society of Philadelphia. Much of his life after this point was spent conducting research on the history of the Bunting family and related families in the Darby area. He routinely responded to many research requests of various Darby families, and his correspondence and research is included in this collection. In 1906 he married Anna Miller Bunting (1859-1945) who was a distant cousin.
