Scope and Contents
This collection consists of two folders, organized chronologically. The first contains documents (Phoenix articles and reports, faculty meeting statements and agendas, etc.) pertaining to the Black Admissions Crisis in 1969, and to the follow-up to that situation. The second contains meeting minutes, memos, and other official papers with Barus’ personal notes.

Biographical / Historical
Carl Barus was a professor of engineering at Swarthmore College and activist for peace and social justice. He was born in September 21, 1919, in New Jersey and earned a degree in physics from Brown University in 1941. He served in WWII and then earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering from MIT. He left industry in 1952 to join the faculty of Swarthmore College. In 1963, he spent ten months in Nigeria in a educational exchange program. Barus retired from teaching in 1985, but remained active in the College and in social causes. He died October 29, 1990.

Overview
Carl Barus was a professor of engineering and social activist. He taught in the Engineering Department at Swarthmore College from 1952 to 1985. He was active in negotiating a resolution to the 1969 admissions office sit-in by SASS and subsequently served on the Black Concerns Committee. Contains papers on African American student concerns at Swarthmore from the SASS sit-in in 1969 to minutes and papers of the Black Concerns Committee in the 1980s.
