Scope and Contents

This collection contains two bound notebooks with handwritten math and science problems, possibly intended as reference books. Each book has an alphabetical table of contents in the front. They contain large numbers of explanations, carefully-drawn diagrams, and proofs.

Biographical / Historical

Arthur Beardsley was born November 1, 1843, in New York State. He studied at Bowdoin College and earned a degree in civil engineering at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1867. In addition to practicing as a civil engineer, he taught at the University of Minnesota from 1863-1872.

He was a Professor of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at Swarthmore College from 1872-1889 and Librarian of Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College from 1893-1917. He died January 29, 1917. A Quaker and member of Swarthmore Monthly Meeting, he is credited with designing the meeting house on the campus as well as his residence and several other buildings in Swarthmore.
