Jessie Gilroy (Warneke) scrapbook
Scope and Contents
The Jessie Gilroy scrapbook houses the two-volume scrapbook of Jessie Gilroy, Bryn Mawr College class of 1909. Volume 1 consists of material from 1906-1910, is primarily photographs, while Volume 2 consists of material from 1908-1910, and contains a great deal of personal memorabilia.
The collection consists of a two-volume scrapbook. Volume 1 of this scrapbook consists of loose pages in an acid-free folder. As previously mentioned, this scrapbook is primarily a photo album. Some noteworthy photos in this book include: a picture of the 1910 Freshman Hockey team in excellent condition, with subjects identified; portraits in cap and gown of Jeanne Kerr and Berry Swift, with photo of student room; pamphlet for the New Gymnasium, with picture, 1908; 16 professional photos from May Day, 1910; 60 portraits of the class of 1910, with names; small candid photos of girls playing basketball and field hockey, 1910; panoramic photo of unidentified play; photos from “Medea” and “Love’s Labor Lost,” and photo of M. Carey Thomas speaking from Deanery, last day of classes, 1910.
Volume 2 is more of a blank notebook with material folded inside than a scrapbook proper; nevertheless, it contains some interesting material. Noteworthy material includes: a calendar from Colgate and Co. 1909; several drawings, including hand-drawn cards and invitations; a 1902 guide to field hockey written by Constance Applebee; musical programs from New York, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia 1908-1909; Bryn Mawr college exams 1908-1909; admission materials; Bryn Mawr College Information for Students; Theodore Roosevelt photo pin; hand-written lyrics to a song about suffrage; and the commencement invitation and program, 1909.
After her career at Bryn Mawr, Jessie Gilroy became a painter, and exhibited in several galleries through the US. Her interest in the visual is reflected in the first volume of her scrapbooks, while Volume 2 contains several of her drawings and sketches. These scrapbooks are among the more exceptional volumes in the Bryn Mawr collection, not only for their connection to Jessie Gilroy, but also for the unique assortment of materials that they contain.

Biographical / Historical
Jessie Gilroy majored in French and Greek, graduating from Bryn Mawr in 1909. She was a painter, and exhibited in several galleries throughout the United States. In 1927, she married the esteemed sculptor Heinz Warneke. She died in 1982.
