Elizabeth Yarnall Maguire scrapbook

 Collection — Volume: 1
Identifier: 9LS-18-SCP-15

Scope and Contents

The Elizabeth Yarnall Maguire scrapbook contains the one volume scrapbook of Elizabeth Maguire, Bryn Mawr class of 1913. The scrapbook consists of materials from 1908-1913 and mostly contains Bryn Mawr memorabilia. It offers a valuable view into the social life and traditions of Bryn Mawr students during the early 20th century.

The scrapbook consists of one volume, the materials within which have been organized by student year. The scrapbook contains notes from friends, small memorabilia from plays, dinner, and large campus events, and professional photographs. There are also clippings from the College News, including a few articles on the changing nature of Rush/Parade Night. The scrapbook has a comprehensive collection of mostly hand-drawn name/toast cards from student dinners. Though each entry often has detailed notes accompanying it, the handwriting can be difficult to read sometimes. The scrapbook also has a great deal of May Day material.

This scrapbook is well-organized and contains a representative assortment of Bryn Mawr memorabilia. This scrapbook sheds light on not only the standard social practices for young women of the day, but also the complex and mutable Bryn Mawr-specific events and traditions. For those interested in Elizabeth Maguire, a member of prominent Yarnall and Maguire families, Maguire’s family papers are also housed in the Archives.
