Biographical / Historical

Andrew Silk (1953-1981) was a 1976 Haverford College Phi Beta Kappa alumnus and an editor of the college student newspaper, Bryn Mawr and Haverford News, who died of cancer in December 1981. He was awarded a Watson Fellowship for journalistic studies in South Africa in 1976-1977 which resulted in the publication of his work written there, A South African Shantytown -- the Modderdam Story, Ravan Press, Spring 1981. During his journalism career, Andrew worked for Greenwich Time in Greenwich, Connecticut and the Virginian-Pilot Ledger Star in Richmond, Virginia. In Andrew's memory, his parents, Bernice and Leonard Silk, established a fund for summer internships for Haverford and Bryn Mawr students at those papers. The fund also supports the Andrew Silk Journalism Panel, which is held every spring for Haverford and Bryn Mawr students. Participants have included several alumni and other journalists from major news organizations around the country discussing issues related to the media.
