Biographical / Historical

Friends belonging to Patapsco Preparative Meeting, a subordinate of Gunpowder Monthly, changed the site of their meeting to the more rapidly growing Baltimore Town in 1781. With the consent of the parent Meeting and the Western Quarterly Meeting, Patapsco Preparative Meeting, now Baltimore Monthly Meeting, was established in 1792. In 1807, with an increase in membership, Baltimore Monthly was divided into two meetings: Baltimore Monthly Meeting, Western District, and Baltimore Monthly Meeting, Eastern District. In 1828, when Orthodox Friends separated from the Hicksites, they formed Baltimore Monthly Meeting for the Eastern and Western District. Originally this meeting met at the Cortland Street Meeting House. In 1867, the meeting moved to Eutaw Street. During this time the meeting was known as Baltimore Monthly Meeting, Orthodox. In 1922, the meeting again moved, this time to the Homewood Meeting House. By 1927, the meeting bore the name Baltimore Monthly meeting, Homewood.
