Biographical / Historical
In the late 1850s, Quakers from Baltimore Monthly Meeting sponsored a Boy's Meeting in rented facilities in the Federal Hill section of south Baltimore. In the next twenty years, a Mothers' Meeting, Girls' Sewing Meeting, Men's Bible Class, and Night School were started. In 1871 they purchased property on Light Street and, in 1879, built a new building.
Some members of Federal Hill formed a Friends' Federal Hill Mission Gospel Society. Others requested that a meeting for worship be held on First Days. There is no record of a monthly meeting being established there, but a regular Meeting for Worship met once a month and was formally sanctioned in 1893. In 1906, a Local Business Meeting was set off, but was laid down only three years later.
This meeting was also called the Light Street Meeting.
